TEMPORARY USE SPARE TIRE APPLICATION AND USAGE

THE PURPOSE OF THIS BULLETIN IS TO CLARIFY GENERAL MOTORS' CURRENT USAGE OF TEMPORARY SPARES ON PASSENGER CARS (1983-84 MODELS). ALL GM CARS ARE EQUIPPED WITH ONE OF TWO TYPES OF TEMPORARY SPARES AS STANDARD EQUIPMENT: 1. THE STOWAWAY (FOLDING) SPARE IS USED ONLY IN "F" CARS (CAMAROS AND FIREBIRDS) WITH LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIALS. THIS IS BECAUSE THESE VEHICLES REQUIRE SPARES WHICH, WHEN PROPERLY INFLATED, ARE THE SAME DIAMETER AS THE ROAD TIRES. TO PROVIDE PROPER STOWAGE FOR SUCH A "LARGE" SPARE, THE STOWAWAY SPARE MUST BE USED. THE STOWAWAY SPARE IS SERVICED AS AN ASSEMBLY AND IS AVAILABLE ONLY THROUGH GOODYEAR; ASK FOR THEIR PRODUCT CODE 816-770-152. IT REQUIRES A REFILLABLE CO2 INFLATOR, WHICH IS PROVIDED FROM THE FACTORY, AND IS AVAILABLE THROUGH GM PARTS (P/N 9590678). 2. THE COMPACT (HIGH PRESSURE) SPARE IS USED ON ALL OTHER GM CARS. IT REMAINS INFLATED AND IS DESIGNED TO OPERATE AT 60 PSI. THIS SPARE IS USUALLY SMALLER IN DIAMETER THAN THE ROAD TIRES, YET THE WHEEL IS USUALLY ONE INCH LARGER IN DIAMETER THAN THE ROAD WHEELS. THE COMPACT SPARE IS SERVICEABLE USING CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES. THE TIRE IS AVAILABLE THROUGH FIRESTONE, GENERAL, GOODYEAR, GOODRICH, AND UNIROYAL. THE WHEEL IS AVAILABLE THROUGH GM PARTS. THE WHEELS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH COMPACT SPARE TIRES ONLY. WHEN PROPERLY INFLATED AND INSTALLED, BOTH SPARES WILL PROVIDE SATIS- FACTORY SERVICE UNTIL THE ROAD TIRE CAN BE CONVENIENTLY REPLACED. --MAKE SURE THAT THE PROPER SPARE IS INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE.-- TIRE SIZE AND PRESSURE FOR BOTH SPARE TIRES AND ROAD TIRES CAN BE FOUND ON THE TIRE PLACARD LOCATED ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR EDGE. THE HIGHLIGHTS OF EACH SPARE ARE SUMMARIZED BELOW: STOWAWAY SPARE COMPACT SPARE (FOLDING) (HIGH PRESSURE) - USAGE CAMARO,FIREBIRD WITH LIMITED ALL OTHERS SLIP - REQUIRES INFLATOR YES (P/N 9590678) NO - SERVICEABLE NO YES - INFLATION PRESSURE SAME AS ROAD TIRES 60 PSI - SUPPLIED BY GOODYEAR (PRODUCT CODE FIRESTONE, 816-770-152) GENERAL, GOODYEAR, UNIROYAL, AND GOODRICH

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
