RADIO LOCK UP W/JUMP START OR WHEN BATTERY IS RECONNECTED

Subject: RADIO MAY LOCK UP WHEN BATTERY IS RECONNECTED (REPLACE STEERING WHEEL PAD)

Models Affected: 1991 PONTIAC 6000 MODELS W/UX1 RADIO

Condition:

---------- The UX1 radio (non-CD player with steering wheel controls) may lock up if the battery is disconnected, then reconnected with the ignition key in the "off" position. This may also happen if the battery is dead, and the car is jumped started.

Cause:

------- The steering wheel control pad assembly may not be compatible with the radio, for the above reconnect condition only, for some early built 1991 models.

Correction:

----------- If this condition is found, replace the steering wheel control pad assembly with a new pad, P/N 16161352. Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

The following procedure will unlock the radio:

1. With ignition off, remove both the "RADIO" fuse in the fuse block and the "ARC RADIO" fuse in the convenience center.

2. Turn the ignition switch on. Install the "RADIO" fuse FIRST, then install the "ARC RADIO" fuse. The radio should now operate correctly.

Use Labor Operation Number: T1702 (If Pad Is Not Available)

Labor Time: 0.3 Hour

Labor Operation: R0740 For Pad Replacement

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
