HORN SOUNDS AT COLD TEMPERATURES

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1982 AND 1983 PONTIAC 'A', 'B', 'J' AND 'X' SERIES HORN SOUNDING AT COLD TEMPERATURES MAY BE CAUSED BY SHRINKAGE OF THE HORN PAD PLASTIC RETAINER WHICH IN TURN ALLOWS THE TWO (2) METAL HORN PLATES TO MAKE CONTACT. TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION: 1. REMOVE HORN PAD ASSEMBLY FROM STEERING WHEEL BY REMOVING TWO (2) RETAINER SCREWS. 2. REMOVE VINYL HORN PAD FROM PLASTIC HORN PAD RETAINER. USING A SHARP KNIFE, CAREFULLY CUT OFF HEAT STAKES 1,3,5 AND 6 BENEATH THE UPPER METAL CONTACT PLATE (NEAREST DRIVER) FLUSH WITH THE PLASTIC HORN PAD RETAINER. BE CAREFUL NOT TO BEND OR KINK THE UPPER METAL CONTACT PLATE (SEE ILLUSTRATION). LATE PRODUCTION ASSEMBLIES MAY HAVE THESE STAKES ALREADY REMOVED. ON THESE ASSEMBLIES CAREFULLY LIFT UPPER METAL CONTACT PLATE AND ASSURE THAT STAKES HAVE BEEN TRIMMED FLUSH. 3. CUT FIVE (5) ONE INCH LONG PIECES OF 3M NEOPRENE TAPE (PART NUMBER 06377, 06378, 06379 OR EQUIVALENT - BODY SIDE MOULDING TAPE). DO NOT REMOVE THE BACKING FROM ONE SIDE OF THE TAPE. 4. AT FIVE (5) LOCATIONS SHOWN IN ILLUSTRATION, SLIDE ONE-HALF INCH OF TAPE UNDER UPPER METAL CONTACT PLATE (ADHESIVE SIDE UP) AND FOLD REMAINING ONE-HALF INCH OVER TOP OF CONTACT PLATE (SEE SECTION AA OF ILLUSTRATION). DO NOT REMOVE THE TAPE BACKING. 5. REINSTALL VINYL HORN PAD TO PLASTIC HORN PAD RETAINER. 6. REINSTALL HORN PAD ASSEMBLY TO STEERING WHEEL. TIGHTEN ATTACHING SCREWS TO 1.2-1.8 N.M (10.5-16 IN. LB.). OVERTIGHTENING WILL DIS- TORT PAD RETAINER.
