UPDATE:A-6000 STE MODELS SEAT ADJUSTER INFO/SERVICE

A new passenger and driver's manual six-way seat adjuster was introduced into 1983 Pontiac production in November of 1982. This adjuster will be installed in the Pontiac 6000 STE only.

The adjuster has two (2) release levers, one (1) for front vertical (item 7, Figure 1) and the other for horizontal adjustment (item 15, Figure 1), and a knob attached to a drive shaft for rear vertical adjustments.

To adjust the front vertical, pull upward on the "T" shaped release handle to disengage the lock plate from the front lever arm pin. Two (2) lock plates (see Figure 2 on the reverse side) are incorporated into the design which allow the front of the seat to raise or lower to nine (9) different positions. The inner plate has four (4) notches and the outer plate has five (5) notches. The nine (9) notches are spaced in increments of 6.25mm for a total travel of 50mm.

To adjust the horizontal travel, pull outward on the release lever to disengage the lock bars from both seat adjuster lower channels. The seat travel is 180mm from front to rear.

To adjust the rear vertical, turn the large knob clockwise to raise and counterclockwise to lower the rear portion of the seat. The rear vertical adjustment has two (2) assist springs for raising the rear of the seat.

The seat assembly can be disassembled into three (3) major assemblies (inner, outer and vertical adjuster assemblies). To disassemble and assemble the adjuster assembly, follow procedure outlined below.

Removal & Installation

1. Remove seat adjuster inner or outer pin retaining rings.

2. Remove locking bar release wire.

3. Remove inner or outer adjuster by driving adjuster off retainer pins with a rubber mallet or similar tool.

4. To install, reverse removal procedure.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
