AN APPARENT STONE CHIPPING CONDITION HAS BEEN REPORTED ON OSHAWA PRODUCED VEHICLES. THIS CHIPPING CONDITION WHICH APPEARS ALONG THE ROCKER PANELS, DOG LEGS AND BEHIND THE WHEEL OPENINGS MAY BE DUE TO A LACK OF PAINT ADHESION IN THE AREAS OF THE ANTI-CHIP MATERIAL. THE LACK OF ADHESION COULD BE DUE TO AN INADEQUATE SEALER COAT BETWEEN THE PRIMER AND THE TOPCOATS (SEE FIGURE 1). THE CONDITION CAN BE CONFIRMED BY APPLYING A 3 INCH STRIP OF MASKING TAPE TO THE AFFECTED AREAS. REMOVE THE TAPE USING A QUICK SNAPPING MOTION AND CHECK FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE TOPCOATS WITH THE TAPE. THE GREY MATERIAL ON THE TAPE IS THE LACQUER GROUND COAT. VEHICLES BUILT AFTER THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAK POINTS SHOULD BE ALRIGHT. CHEVROLET "A" - 1W814954 PONTIAC "A" - 2G211201 CHEVROLET "B" - 1N199861 TO REPAIR THIS CONDITION, IT IS NECESSARY TO REMOVE ONLY THE LACQUER TOPCOATS. A LACQUER REMOVING SOLVENT WILL DO THIS WITHOUT DISTURBING THE FACTORY PRIME AND ANTI-CHIP MATERIAL. A SEALER COAT WILL HAVE TO BE APPLIED AS SPECIFIED BELOW. THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE WILL RESULT IN A SUCCESSFUL REPAIR OF THIS CONDITION: 1.REMOVE THE LACQUER TOP COLOUR AND GROUND COATS USING A LACQUER REMOVING SOLVENT OR AN ACRYLIC LACQUER PAINT REMOVER. (SEE MATERIAL CHART). THESE SOLVENTS WILL NOT DISTURB THE FACTORY PRIME. NO SANDING SHOULD BE NECESSARY. 2.THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE AREA USING A RECOMMENDED WAX, GREASE AND SILICONE REMOVER. (SEE MATERIAL CHART). 3.APPLY A SEALER COAT PER THE MANUFACTURER'S INSTRUCTIONS. (SEE MATERIAL CHART). 4.APPLY THE ACRYLIC LACQUER COLOUR COAT. 5.ALLOW TO DRY AND COMPOUND AS REQUIRED. General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
