INOP. OR MALFUNCTIONING GAGES REPLACE THE I/P CLUSTER

SUBJECT: INOPERATIVE OR MALFUNCTIONING GAUGES ON I/P CLUSTER (REPLACE THE CLUSTER)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1990 TROFEO AND TORONADO

This Bulletin has been revised to change the 'important' section, add information to the list of gauge names, deleted the last sentence in the last paragraph and added a code under the warranty.

Some 1990 Oldsmobile Trofeo and Toronado models equipped with analog I/P Clusters may experience inoperative or malfunctioning cluster gauges doe to damaged flex circuit boards internal to the cluster. The affected vehicles may also experience a high pitched whining noise coming from the cluster. The noise may appear to be intermittent because it varies with gauge position. Example: The fuel gauge may be noisy around 1/4 tank.

To repair the whining noise condition replace the cluster. Follow the exchange procedure.

IMPORTANT: The Driver Information Display (DID), on vehicles so equipped, may exhibit a high pitched whine noise which may be perceived by some owners. This noise is similar to the one emitted by some television sets and is normal.

The DID may be referred to by some people as the CRT or VIC.

To repair an inoperative or malfunctioning gauge it is first necessary to determine whether the cluster gauge or the associated BCM system or wiring is at fault. To verify that the gauge is inoperative check the associated data parameter through the on-board diagnostics. Refer to Section 8D in the 1990 Trofeo/ Toronado Service Manual for instructions on entering diagnostics. The following provides the gauge name and associated data parameter.

Speedometer: ED12 (VSS) Oil Pressure: BD71 Coolant Temperature: ED04 (Diagnostics displays coolant temperature in Celsius. To convert to Fahrenheit multiply by 1.8 and add 32) Tachometer: ED11 Battery Voltage: EDIO Fuel Level: BD40

If the value in diagnostics is reasonable but different than the cluster gauge display, replace the cluster. Example: Battery voltage ED10 is 14.5 in diagnostics with engine running and cluster gauge is 0 volts, replace cluster. Follow the exchange procedure.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
