Some 1990 Toronados may experience deck lid hinge spring which squeaks and resonates during deck lid operation. This condition is caused by the end of the adjusting bolt contacting the extension spring.
To repair this condition the deck lid extension springs, both right and left sides, must be replaced with new springs, P/N 20750292, that contain two silencers per spring and an increased spring diameter. Operating effort in the deck lid is also improved using the new springs. Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
When replacing the deck lid springs, use the following procedure:
1. Remove carpet side panel to expose extension spring assembly.
2. Loosen spring adjuster bolt and remove from bracket slot. Refer to Figure 1, Item 1.
3. Remove hook end of spring from hole in hinge assembly. Refer to Figure 1, Item 2.
Reassembly of Extension Spring Assembly
1. Load hook of spring to hole in hinge assembly. Refer to Figure 1, item 2.
2. Load adjuster end of bolt and spring assembly to slot in bracket. Figure 1, Item 1.
3. Drive adjuster bolt to torque set-up dimension spec of 50.0mm. Refer to Figure 1, Item A.
4. Replace carpet side panel.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
