SUBJECT: INFORMATION CONCERNING CRUISE CONTROL OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1991 OLDSMOBILE NINETY-EIGHT AND TORONADO

The cruise control system on the 1991 Ninety-Eight and Toronados is now controlled by the PCM instead of a separate module. The operation is the same except for a few changes listed below.

The "set speed" is now lost when the transaxle is shifted to park or certain malfunction codes are set. Set speed is also lost if the ignition is turned off or the C/C switch is turned off as in the past.

Note: Make sure the brake switch is properly adjusted.

To set a speed: - Vehicle must be in Overdrive, Drive, or L2. - Malfunction codes must be cleared or in history. - Vehicle speed is above 24 MPH. - Engine RPM above 500 and below 5400 - Brake switch released (foot off pedal).

To disengage cruise: - Vehicle in Neutral, Reverse, L1 or Park. - Depressing set/coast and resume/accel switches simultaneously. - Certain malfunction codes. - Brake switch applied (foot on brake pedal). - Accel or decel rate beyond calibrated limits. - Engine RPM above 5400 or below 500. - Vehicle speed, below 20 mph.

Please make a reference to this bulletin in your 1991 Ninety-Eight Service Manual on pages 6E3-C17-1 and 9B-1.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
