LIGHT RATTLE IN THE MANUAL LOCK/UNLOCK SLIDER BUTTON

SUBJECT: LIGHT RATTLE IN THE MANUAL LOCK/UNLOCK SLIDER BUTTON AREA WHILE DRIVING OVER ROUGH ROADS (APPLY FOAM PATCH/TAPE)

MODELS: 1991-96 OLDSMOBILE NINETY EIGHT 1992-96 OLDSMOBILE EIGHTY EIGHT, LSS

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON A LIGHT RATTLE IN THE AREA OF THE TRIM ESCUTCHEON MANUAL LOCK/UNLOCK SLIDER BUTTON ON THE FRONT DOORS WHILE DRIVING OVER ROUGH OR BUMPY ROADS.

CAUSE:

1. THE WHITE PLASTIC INSERT ON THE VERTICAL ROD THAT CONNECTS TO THE MANUAL LOCK/UNLOCK ROD RATTLES DUE TO EXCESSIVE CLEARANCE.

2. THE END OF THE MANUAL LOCK/UNLOCK ROD THAT INTERFACES WITH THE TRIM ESCUTCHEON MANUAL LOCK/UNLOCK SLIDER BUTTON IS MISSING ITS YELLOW CAP.

CORRECTION:

1. REMOVE DOOR TRIM PANEL AND WATER DEFLECTOR. REFER TO SECTION 10-6 IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. DETERMINE CAUSE OF RATTLE.

3. IF CAUSE #1 IS EVIDENT, APPLY AN ADHESIVE, FOAM PATCH (PREFERABLY WITH A SMOOTH SURFACE) TRIMMED TO FIT. REFER TO FIGURE 1. TO INSTALL FOAM PATCH, IT IS NECESSARY TO REMOVE VERTICAL ROD, INSERT FOAM PATCH OVER ROD RETAINER AND REINSTALL ROD.

4. IF CAUSE #2 IS EVIDENT, APPLY TAPE TO ROD END UNTIL AN INTERFERENCE FIT IS OBTAINED BETWEEN THE ROD AND THE TRIM ESCUTCHEON MANUAL LOCK/UNLOCK SLIDER BUTTON.

5. VERIFY UNRESTRICTED ROD MOVEMENT AND PROPER FUNCTION PRIOR TO REINSTALLATION OF WATER DEFLECTOR AND TRIM PANEL.

6. INSTALL WATER DEFLECTOR AND TRIM PANEL.

7. CONFIRM PROPER LOCK FUNCTION BOTH ELECTRICALLY AND MANUALLY.
