Repair Procedure

    Important:  The rearview mirror is attached to a rearview mirror support which is bonded to the windshield. This rearview mirror support is installed by the windshield supplier using a plastic-polyvinyl butyral adhesive. In order to install a detached rearview mirror support or install a new part, use the following items.

       • Loctite™ Minute-Bond Adhesive 312 two component pack P/N 1052369 or equivalent
       • Original rearview mirror support (prepared per steps 4 and 5 of installation procedure) or a new replacement rearview mirror support
       • A wax marking pencil or crayon
       • Isopropyl alcohol
       • A clean paper towel
       • Fine grit emery cloth or sandpaper (320 or 360)

  1. Measure from top of the windshield (1) to top of the rearview mirror support.

    2. Measurement

  2. Mark the location (2) of the mirror on the outside of the windshield with wax pencil or crayon. Make a larger diameter circle (3) around the rearview mirror support circle on the outside windshield surface.
  3. On the inside windshield surface, clean the large circle with a paper towel and domestic scouring cleanser, GM Window Cleaner GM P/N 1050427 or polishing compound. Rub until the area is completely clean and dry. When dry, clean the area with a paper towel saturated with isopropyl alcohol. This will remove any traces of scouring powder or cleaning solution.
  4. With a piece of fine grit (320 or 360) emery cloth or sandpaper, sand the bonding surface of the new rearview mirror support or the factory installed rearview mirror support. If the original rearview mirror support is to be reused, remove all traces of factory installed adhesive prior to reinstallation.
  5. Wipe the sanded rearview mirror support with a clean paper towel which is saturated with isopropyl alcohol, Allow to dry.
  6. Follow the directions on the manufacturer's kit in order to prepare the rearview mirror support prior to installation on the windshield.
  7. Properly position the rearview mirror support to its premarked location, with the rounded end pointed upward; press the rearview mirror support against the windshield for 30-60 seconds, exerting a steady pressure against the windshield.
  8. After five minutes, remove any excess adhesive using a paper towel which is moistened with isopropyl alcohol or a window cleaning solution.
  9. Install the rearview mirror. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement .
