CAMPAIGN: VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION LABEL

MODELS/YEARS 1988 OLDSMOBILE DELTA 88 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH CALIFORNIA EMISSION 3800 V-6 ENGINES (VIN CODE C) AND BUILT AT WILLOW RUN ASSEMBLY CENTER

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that some 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 models built at the Willow Run Assembly Center have incorrect information on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label. The misprinted label is missing a key phrase identifying the vehicle as being eligible for sale, use, or registration in California. The label is required by the Federal Clean Air Act, and by the State of California.

To correct this error, new labels will be provided for each vehicle involved.

Since the label can be replaced very easily and because we do not want to cause owner's unnecessary inconvenience, the new labels have been furnished directly to affected owners from records available to Oldsmobile.

Owners may install the label personally or request that it be installed by your dealership. Should the latter occur, the label is to be installed at no charge to the owner. A copy of the owner letter is included in this builetin.

Dear Oldsmobile Owner

This notice is to inform you Oldsmobile Division is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.

REASON FOR RECALL

General Motors has determined that some 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 models have incorrect information on the Vehicle Emision Control Information Label. The misprinted label is missing a key phrase identifying your vehicle as being eligible for sale, use, or registration in California.

WHAT WE WILL DO

To correct this error, a new Vehicle Emission Control Information Label will be provided for each vehicle involved.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Please inspect/install the provided label or take the label and your vehicle to your Oldsmobile dealer for inspection/installation, at no charge to you.

To inspect/install the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label yourself, follow these simple steps:

1. Open hood and locate old label on radiator upper mounting support.

2. If the old label is larger than the new label, the information is correct and the new label does not need to be installed and should be discarded.

3. If new label is the same size as the old label, clean the surface of the old label with soapy water, wipe dry, remove backing from NEW label and apply it over the old label.

NOTICE: Do not attempt to remove or loosen the new label once it has been applied as this will deface the label.

If you install the new label rather than asking your dealer to do it, or if you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage-paid owner reply card and returning it to us. This will assist us in assuring that all affected vehicles have been corrected and also will eliminate follow-up notifications.

Should you choose to have an Oldsmobile dealer install the label, please contact your dealer to arrange a service date to have this correction made. Take the enclosed label with you. The labor time to perform this correction is about five (5) minutes. Please allow additional time for your dealer to process your vehicle.

We are sorry for this inconvenience; however, we took this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
