TRANSAXLE NEUTRAL GEAR RATTLE (5 SPEED M/T GETRAG 284 M27)

SUBJECT: TRANSAXLE NEUTRAL GEAR RATTLE - REPLACE CLUTCH DISC

MODELS/YEARS: 1991-92 CUTLASS SUPREME WITH 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSAXLE

Some 1991-92 Cutlass Supreme's may exhibit a "rattle" noise when the Getrag 284 5-speed transaxle (M27) is in neutral with the clutch engaged and engine is at idle.

Various levels of minor gear "rattle" or noise are inherent in all manual transaxles. The customer may perceive gear 'rattle' as clutch, engine, and/or transmission noise. The "rattle" noise is normal and will not affect the function or durability of the vehicle.

Inherently, a clutch disc that is designed to dampen neutral gear rattle may increase clunk between shifts or during throttle tip in and tip out.

Before replacing any components, test drive the vehicle to evaluate the severity of the neutral gear rattle and clunk. A minor level of both these conditions is normal.

If the clunk is not objectionable, a different clutch disc (P/N 101 1 1523) is available to address the neutral gear rattle concern. This part is currently available at GMSPO.

Note: Replace clutch components per Service Manual. Be sure to follow the proper clutch cover bolts tightening sequence as stated in the manual.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
