1988 CUTLASS CIERA MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 2.5L, 2.8L OR 3.8L ENGINES
Some customers may comment about a rubbing noise from the front of the vehicle when going over bumps or making turns. This noise may be due to the strut spring deflecting and contacting the inner surface of the strut tower.
This condition can be repaired by replacing the front strut spring with a new spring obtained from GMSPO. Before re-installing the strut assembly, the inner strut tower sheet metal should be adjusted to eliminate any locations where the sheet metal or a weld seam protrudes toward the spring. This can be accomplished by carefully striking the protruding sheet metal with a hammer or another appropriate tool. If required, paint and/or undercoating should be re-applied to the affected areas.
If replacing the strut spring fails to correct the condition, it may be necessary to slot the strut tower (no more than 1/8") to allow shifting the strut assembly slightly outward. Camber and toe-in should be checked and adjusted if necessary.
Use appropriate Labor Operations and Times.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
