CAMPAIGN: FRONT FUEL FEED & RETURN HOSES (POSSIBLE LEAK)

Subject: FRONT FUEL FEED/RETURN HOSES

Models/Years: SOME 1990 CUTLASS CALAIS 2.3L (VIN CODES A & D) 2.5L (VIN CODE U) 3.3L (VIN CODE N)

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais model vehicles. Some of these vehicles may have improperly torqued connections of the Front Fuel Feed/Return Hoses to the Fuel Pipes at the body rail. A fitting may loosen enough to leak fuel into the underhood area, and ff an ignition source is present, could result in a fire.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

All 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais model vehicles between breakpoints:

Beginning Through & VIN Including --------- --------- LM740074 LM742204

All engine types are included.

All vehicles listed on the dealer printout will require correction. Should a question arise concerning the campaign involvement of a specific vehicle within the breakpoints listed above that does not appear on the dealer printout, dealers should access the Vehicle Information Service System (V.I.S.S.) for verification.

DEALER ACTION

To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers are to torque the fittings between the Front Fuel Feed/Return Hoses and the Fuel Feed/Return Pipes (at body rail in the engine compartment).

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open hood and locate the fittings where the Front Fuel Feed Hose (from engine), and the Front Fuel Return Hose join the Fuel Pipes at the body rail (Lower left hand engine compartment).

2. Torque both the Fuel Feed and the Fuel Return fittings to 27 N.m (20 Lbs-ft) using a torque wrench (16 mm) and a backup wrench (19 mm).

For Quad 4 engines (VIN Codes 'A' or 'D"), see Figure (1); the fittings to be torqued are labelled "5' and '6" in the figure.

For 2.5L engines (VIN Code 'U"), see Figure (2); the fittings to be torqued are labelled "3" and "5" in the figure.

For 3.3L V6 engines (VIN Code "N"), see Figure (3); the fittings to be torqued are labelled "7" and "8" in the figure.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
