QUAD 4 (LD2) ENGINE EXCHANGE PROGRAM
1989 CUTLASS CALAIS EQUIPPED WITH A QUAD 4 (LD2) ENGINE (VIN CODE D)
The 1988 Quad 4 (LD2) Engine Parts Exchange Program as outlined in Dealer Technical Bulletin 88-T-02 will conclude on September 26, 1988. We extend our thanks to the dealers who participated.
Beginning with the 1989 model year, 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais models equipped with a Quad 4 (LD2) engine will be included in a limited volume engine exchange program. This program will end on February 1, 1989. The purpose of this engine exchange program is to provide early engineering feedback for product evaluation.
A special limited Quad 4 (LD2) Engine Exchange Program will be conducted until February 1, 1989. The program involves the replacement of a 1989 Quad 4 engine assembly with a special exchange engine. An exchange engine is to be used only when diagnosis indicates major engine damage has occurred which would most likely require engine or engine block replacement.
This special exchange engine includes the block, head, cam housings and covers, internal parts, the oil pan, front cover and the water pump body assembly.
The returned engine will be evaluated for the product problem suspected; therefore, it is important not to disassemble the engine any further than is necessary during diagnosis.
Any condition other than major engine damage are to be serviced using current published procedures. Oldsmobile Product Service Engineering Technical Assistance (517-885-OLDS) is available if diagnostic assistance is required.
If an exchange engine is required, dealer personnel are to call Oldsmobile Product Service Engineering (517-885-OLDS) with the request. When calling, have the following information available:
1. Vehicle identification number 2. Vehicle mileage 3. Repair order number 4. Description of customer complaint 5. Diagnostic work performed 6. Six-digit dealer parts code 7. Dealer shipping address (not P.O. Box) 8. Dealer telephone number
The service engineer will confirm the need for an exchange engine and will make the shipping arrangements. The engine will be shipped on a no-charge basis, quickest way prepaid, usually the same day. The engine will be shipped with all necessary gaskets to complete the engine installation. It may be necessary to bill the engine with four quarts of 5W30 SG, SF/CC oil as specified in the 1989 New Product Service Manual.
The engine will be shipped to you in a returnable shipping container. Care should be exercised not to damage the container when unpackaging the engine. With the engine, you will receive:
1. A Bill of Lading for return of the engine 2. Self-addressed shipping label 3. Plastic bag 4. Information Return Tag
Fill out the information Return Tag and attach it to the engine.
If the engine is leaking oil, it will be necessary to place the plastic under the engine to keep the oil from dripping in the truck. if oil is not a problem, you can either place the engine in the bag or put the engine in the crate and place the bag over the top. in either case, make sure the bag will protect the engine from rain or snow during transit.
Recrate the engine and staple the return shipping label to the outside of the crate.
The Bill of Lading is the only shipping document you need to ship the engine. It is important that the carrier name indicated on the Bill of Lading be used to return the engine. All required data has been filled out except for the date. Please do this and keep the last copy with your repair order and provide the other two copies to the carrier. Your copy of the Bill of Lading, signed by the carrier, is your proof of returning the engine.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
