COURTESY LIGHTS DO NOT OPERATE WITH DOOR OPEN

COURTESY LIGHTS DO NOT OPERATE WITH DOOR OPEN (DOOR JAMB SWITCHES SHOULD BE INSPECTED FOR CORROSION)

1985-1989 CUTLASS CALAIS

Comments received for inoperative courtesy lights when either right or left front door is opened may be due to corroded door jamb switches. When this comment is received, the door jamb switches should be inspected for corrosion. If corrosion is present, the door jamb switch should be replaced and the areas shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 inspected for water leaks. The illustrations will assist you in sealing the possible sources of water entry that will cause corrosion of the switch. Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, apply a medium bodied sealer to eliminate sealer gaps and water entry in the areas shown at the base of the "A" pillar. These areas are accessible by removing screws labeled No. 3 in Figure 4.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
