End Gate Adjustments

Figures 1 and 2

Before performing any adjustments, mark the original position of die hinge, lock or striker to be adjusted.

Proper diagnosis of a misaligned condition can eliminate performing unnecessary adjustments. To properly evaluate a misaligned end gate, remove the upper right lock striker (49). If the end gate, when opened as a door, rides up or is pulled down by the lower right lock striker (49), the lower right lock striker (49) should be adjusted.

The left hinges allow adjustment of the end gate position in the body opening, flush alignment of the end gate outer panel with adjacent panels, and proper lock operation.

Adjust

Important

The right upper and lower lock strikers (49) should be removed before performing any other hinge or lock adjustment. Refer to "Right Lock Strikers" in this section.

Improper adjustment of right lower lock striker (49) may cause: "GATE AJAR" lamp and roof rail courtesy and reading lamp to illuminate.

1. Left lower hinge (72) at the body attachment up or down and from side to side.

* To gain access to left lower hinge-to-body attachments, remove left quarter trim. Refer to REAR QUARTERS (SEC. 10-7). Loosen hinge-to-body attachments and adjust up, down, sideways, or rotate as required.

* Rotating the hinge slightly will raise or lower the right side of the gate. This can be accomplished by loosening the left lower hinge-to- body attachments. Then, with the end gate open as a door, support the right side of the end gate in the desired position and tighten the left lower hinge attaching nuts. If this adjustment is performed or if the end gate is moved sideways, it may be necessary to also adjust the left upper hinge striker (69).

* If the left lower hinge (72) is adjusted upward or downward, clearance between the left upper hinge gate side lock (82) on the end gate and the left upper hinge striker (69) on the body pillar should be checked. Clearance should be 8 mm (5/16-inch). The left upper hinge gate side lock (82) should be adjusted as needed to meet this specification.

End Gate Adjustments

Figures 1 and 2

Before performing any adjustments, mark the original position of the hinge, lock or striker to be adjusted.

Proper diagnosis of a misaligned condition can eliminate performing unnecessary adjustments. To properly evaluate a misaligned end gate, remove die upper right lock striker (49).

Improper adjustment of right lower lock striker (49) may cause "GATE AJAR" lamp and roof rail courtesy and reading lamp to illuminate.

1. Left lower hinge (72) at the body attachment up or down and from side to side.

o To gain access to left lower hinge-to-body attachments, remove left quarter trim. Refer to REAR QUARTERS (SEC. 10-7). Loosen hinge-to-body attachments and adjust up, down, sideways, or rotate as required.

o Rotating the hinge slightly will raise or lower the right side of the gate. This can be accomplished by loosening the left lower hinge-to- body attachments. Then, with the end gate open as a door, support the right side of the end gate in the desired position and tighten the left lower hinge attaching nuts. If this adjustment is performed or if the end gate is moved sideways, it may be necessary to also adjust the left upper hinge striker (69).

o If the left lower hinge (72) is adjusted upward or downward, clearance between the left upper hinge gate side lock (82) on the end gate and the left upper hinge striker (69) on the body pillar should be checked. Clearance should be 8 mm (5/16-inch). The left upper hinge gate side lock (82) should be adjusted as needed to meet this specification.

3. Left quarter trim. Refer to REAR QUARTERS (SEC. 10-7).

4. Electrical connectors.

5. Screws retaining electrical conduit to body.

CAUTION:

With end gate open in the gate position and the left upper lock manually engaged, the end gate has been placed in a vulnerable position and could drop from the right lower lock if the locking rod and/or right end gate door release handle is activated. Do not pull on rod or activate end gate door release handle as personal injury and/or damage to the end gate could result.

Manually latch left upper hinge gate side lock.

Important

The aid of a helper will be required to help support the end gate.

End Gate Adjustments

Figures 3 and 4

Before performing any adjustments, mark the original position of the hinge, lock or striker to be adjusted.

Proper diagnosis of a misaligned condition can eliminate performing unnecessary adjustments. To properly evaluate a misaligned end gate, remove the upper right lock striker (49). If the end gate when opened as a door, rides up or is pulled down by the lower right lock striker (49), the lower right lock striker (49) should be adjusted.

Improper adjustment of right lower lock striker (49) may cause "GATE AJAR" lamp and roof rail courtesy and reading lamp to illuminate.

1. Left lower hinge (72) at the body attachment up or down and from side to side.

To gain access to left lower hinge-to-body attachments, remove left quarter trim. Refer to REAR QUARTERS (SEC. 10-7). Loosen hinge-to-body attachments and adjust up, down, sideways, or rotate as required.

Rotating the hinge slightly will raise or lower the right side of the gate.

If the left lower hinge (72) is adjusted upward or downward, clearance between the left upper hinge gate side lock (82) on the end gate and the left upper hinge striker (69) on the body pillar should be checked. Clearance should be 8 mm (5/16-inch). The left upper hinge gate side lock (82) should be adjusted as needed to meet this specification.

2. Left lower hinge (72) at end gate attachment for ward or rearward.

Forward and rearward adjustment of left lower hinge (72) at the end gate attachment is primarily for flush alignment of the end gate outer panel with adjacent panels in the area of the left lower hinge (72).

The left lower hinge-to-end gate attaching nuts are located inside the end gate. To loosen nuts for adjustment of end gate on hinge, remove trim panel and inner panel left access hole cover to gain access to hinge-to-end gate

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
