This bulletin cancels and supersedes Dealer Technical Bulletin 92-T-46 which should be discarded.
CONDITION - BRAVADA AND CUSTOM CRUISER: The compass mirror, option DD1 on the Custom Cruiser, may become inoperative or erratic, and cannot be calibrated following normal instructions in the owners manual and service manual.
CAUSE - BRAVADA AND CUSTOM CRUISER: Electro-static build-up on the vehicle may interfere with the functioning of the compass. The compass feature was eliminated in production on the Custom Cruiser midway thru the 1992 model year.
CORRECTION - CUSTOM CRUISER ONLY: To insure customer satisfaction, the compass mirror should be replaced with an Electo-Chromic (automatic self-dimming) mirror, P/N 10232109, if the customer comments about the inoperative compass. This part is currently available from GMSPO.
To replace the mirror, use the following procedure:
1. Disconnect the four-way electrical connector to the existing mirror, then remove the #15 Torx screw.
2. Remove and discard the plastic cover over the wire harness. Pull the mirror upward (toward the top of the windshield) to remove it. Discard the existing mirror.
3. Obtain the new mirror. Cut off the single wire lead. This lead supplies a signal from the park/neutral switch, which is not used in the 1991-92 application. Install the new mirror onto the bracket, and tighten the screw snugly. Connect the four-way electrical connector.
4. Copy the owners manual update on the back of this bulletin and provide a copy to the owner. It will explain the operation of the automatic feature.
If the mirror needs service in the future, the 1993 Eighty Eight or Ninety Eight Service Manual can be used.
CORRECTION - BRAVADA ONLY: Take the vehicle to a television repair shop, and request them to do a "Degaussing" operation.
Degaussing consists of passing an electrical device over the car, which will eliminate the magnetic fields. they should degauss the roof, rear of hood, A-pillars, and instrument panel. Degaussing will not affect the operation of any other components of the vehicle. Depending on the type of equipment used, it may be necessary to go over the vehicle twice to completely degauss R.
When the degaussing is complete, reinstall the mirror, then calibrate the compass following normal procedures. Check the compass for proper operation.
Your car has the automatic inside mirror.
The automatic mirror adjusts for the glare of headlights behind you. It detects changes in light, and then adjusts for day or night operation.
During the day the mirror deflects all the light from behind your car. At night, when the glare is too high, it changes to the night mode. Then, it reflects only part of the light from behind you. When the mirror changes to the night mode, it holds that position until glare is no longer present.
The mirror delays before switching from the night back to the day position. This delay prevents rapid changing of the mirror as you drive under lights and through traffic.
Automatic/Off Switch -------------------- Push the switch up for the AUTO position. The switch cap will light indicating the mirror will automatically adjust for glare.
To turn the automatic adjust off, push the switch down.
There are two reading lights located on the rearview mirror. Push the switch closest to the light to turn it on or off.
Use a cotton swab and glass cleaner to clean the two photocells that make the mirror work.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
