Verify that the volt gauge is inaccurate or inoperative.

Does the volt gauge operate normally?

--

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  2. Remove the combs for the instrument cluster connector. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  3. Backprobe the instrument cluster connector with a J 39200 digital multimeter (DMM) and measure the voltage between the ignition 1 voltage circuit and a good ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
  4. Compare the DC voltage reading on the J 39200 DMM and the volt gauge display on the cluster.

Does the volt gauge on the cluster and the DMM display approximately agree?

12-14 VDC

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 4

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
