Removal Procedure
Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:
• | Unnecessary SRS system repairs |
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
• | Refer to SRS Component Views in order to determine if you are
performing service on or near the SRS components or the SRS wiring. |
• | If you are performing service on or near the SRS components or
the SRS wiring, disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS System
in SRS. |
- Disable
the SRS. Refer to
Disabling the SRS
.
- Remove the steering wheel assembly. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
in Steering Wheel and
Column.
- Remove the tilt lever, if equipped. Refer to
Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle
in Steering
Wheel and Column.
- Remove the upper and lower shrouds. Refer to
Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement - On Vehicle
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Remove the multi-function lever. Refer to
Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Pop the wire harness assembly out of the wire harness strap.
- Remove the 3 wire harness straps from the wire harness assembly.
- Remove the wire harness strap from the upper tilt head assembly.
- Remove the coil assembly retaining clip.
- Remove the coil assembly.
- Remove the wave washer.
Installation Procedure
- Install the wave washer.
- In order to install the SRS coil assembly, align the block tooth
on the race and upper shaft assembly to the 12 o'clock position.
Important:
• | Ensure that the coil assembly is centered. |
• | The coil assembly becomes uncentered under the following conditions: |
- | The steering column is seperated from the steering gear and allowed
to rotate. |
- | The centering spring is pushed down allowing the hub to rotate
while the coil is removed from the steering column. |
- | In the event that this occurs, refer to Inflatable Restraint Coil Centering - Off Vehicle (Column Shift and Floor Shift)
in Steering Wheel and Column. |
- Install the pre-centered coil assembly to the steering column.
- Remove the centering tab and discard.
- Install the coil assembly using the following components for alignment:
• | The horn tower on the canceling cam assembly inner ring |
• | The projections on the outer ring. |
Important: Gently pull on the lower coil assembly wire in order to remove any wire
kinks inside of the column assembly. Ensure that there are no kinks or bends
in the SRS coil assembly wire. If a kink or a bend is present, interference
may occur with the shaft lock mechanism. Turning the steering wheel may
cut or damage the wire.
- Install the coil assembly retaining ring. Ensure that the ring is firmly
seated in the groove on the upper shaft assembly.
- Pop the wire harness assembly into the wire strap.
- Install the wire harness strap into the upper tilt head assembly.
- Install 3 wire harness straps from the wire harness assembly.
- Install the multi-function switch lever. Refer to
Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Install the upper and the lower shrouds. Refer to
Multifunction, Turn Signal, and Hazard Switch Replacement - On Vehicle
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Install the tilt lever, if equipped. Refer to
Tilt Lever Replacement - On Vehicle
in Steering
wheel and Column.
- Install the steering wheel assembly. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
in Steering wheel and
Column.
- Enable the SRS. Refer to
Enabling the SRS
