Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 2619-O1 Slide Hammer
    • J 22813-A Axle Bearing Puller
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assemby. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  4. Remove the axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement .
  5. Remove the seal. Use a seal removal tool behind the steel case of the seal. Do NOT damage the housing.

  6. Object Number: 1477  Size: SH
  7. Remove the bearing. Use the J 2619-O1 and the J 22813-A as shown. The tangs of the tool should engage the bearing outer race.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 23765 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer
    • J 23771 Axle Shaft Seal Installer
  1. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  2. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 1478  Size: SH
  4. Install the bearing with the J 23765 until the tool bottoms against the housing shoulder.
  5. Lubricate the bearing with axle lubricant.

  6. Object Number: 1479  Size: SH
  7. Install the seal (1). Use the J 23771 until the seal is flush with the axle tube.
  8. Lubricate the seal lips with axle lubricant.
  9. Install the axle shaft. Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement .
  10. Lower the vehicle.
