Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the A/C condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  5. Remove the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  6. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Removal .
  7. Remove the camshaft sprocket and the camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  8. Remove the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  9. Remove the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls 2.2L.
  10. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal
  11. Inspect the camshaft for wear or damage. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

Important: If installing a new camshaft, change the engine oil and the oil filter.

  1. Install the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Installation .
  2. Install the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls 2.2L.
  3. Install the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft timing chain. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  4. Install the oil pump drive. Refer to Oil Pump Drive Replacement .
  5. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Installation .
  6. Install the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement .
  7. Install the air conditioning condenser, if equipped. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  8. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.
