- Install the input shaft
cover oil seal using J 29162
. The open side of the seal goes toward the tool.
- Install the mainshaft
rear bearing oil seal using J 44708
and J 8092
in the transmission extension. The open side of the seal goes toward the tool.
- Install the countershaft
in the transmission case.
- Stand the transmission case on the front end.
- Install a board between the countershaft and the transmission
case to support the countershaft.
- Install the counter shaft rear bearing inner race.
- Install the countershaft rear bearing using a brass drift and
a hammer.
- Install the retaining ring for the countershaft rear bearing.
- Remove the board and position the countershaft and rear bearing
in the transmission case.
- Install the countershaft
front bearing in the transmission case and on the countershaft.
- Install the countershaft front bearing cover. Do not use any lubricants
or sealers on the cover.
- Install the following
parts for the reverse gear in the transmission case:
12.2. | The reverse gear (2) with the bearings (3) and the
bearing spacer (4) |
12.3. | The reverse gear thrust washer (5) |
- Install a NEW O-ring (6) on the reverse gear shaft (7).
Lightly lubricate the O-ring with oil.
- Install the reverse gear shaft (7) in the transmission
case.
- Align the flat side of the reverse gear shaft towards the transmission
extension.
- Install the mainshaft
assembly in the transmission case.
• | Make sure the 6th gear synchronizer blocker is installed on the
mainshaft. |
• | Lay the transmission case on its side. |
• | Install the output end of the mainshaft assembly in the transmission
case first. |
- Install the reverse gear
thrust washer.
- Install the following components:
• | The mainshaft rear bearing spacer |
• | The rear bearing external retaining ring |
- Install the input shaft.
- Apply a thin coat of Gasket
Maker GM P/N United States 1052943, GM P/N Canada 10953491,
or equivalent to the input shaft bearing cover.
- Install the input shaft bearing cover. The oil groove in the cover
is down.
- Install NEW O-ring seals on the input shaft cover bolts.
- Apply Threadlocker GM P/N United States 12345382,
GM P/N Canada 10953489, or equivalent to the threads
of the input shaft cover bolts.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the input
shaft cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the input shaft cover bolts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Install the speedometer
drive gear. The inside spline end goes towards the yoke.
- Install the transmission
extension and gasket.
- Install the transmission extension bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the transmission extension bolts to 71 N·m (52 lb ft).
- Install the speedometer
driven gear (1) in the transmission extension.
- Install a NEW O-ring (2) seal on the speedometer drive
bushing (3).
- Install the speedometer drive bushing.
- Install the speedometer drive bushing setscrew.
Tighten
Tighten the speedometer drive bushing setscrew to 10 N·m
(89 lb in).
- Install the speedometer sensor to the
speedometer bushing.
- Install the yoke.
- Install a NEW O-ring seal. Lubricate lightly with oil.
- Engage 2 gear sets in order to prevent the mainshaft from turning.
- Install the yoke flange nut.
Tighten
Tighten the yoke flange nut to 800 N·m (560 lb ft).
- Stake the nut at the flat
areas on the mainshaft.
- Install the propeller shaft transmission
yoke.
- Install the propeller shaft transmission yoke nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 175 N·m (130 lb ft).
- Apply a thin coat of Gasket Maker GM P/N United
States 1052943, GM P/N Canada 10953491, or equivalent
to the sealing surface on the transmission case.
- Install the shift cover.
- Install the shift cover bolts and studs.
Tighten
Tighten the shift cover bolts and studs to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).
- Apply Gasket Maker GM P/N United
States 1052943, GM P/N Canada 10953491, or equivalent,
to the shift control sealing surface.
- Install the shift control.
- Install the shift control bolts. Ensure the shoulder bolts are
at the same location.
Tighten
Tighten the shift control bolts to 37 N·m (27 lb ft).
- Apply pipe sealant GM P/N United
States 12346004, GM P/N Canada 10953480, to the
drain plug threads.
- Install the transmission oil drain plug.
Tighten
Tighten the oil drain plug to 69 N·m (51 lb ft).
- Install the clutch housing to the transmission.
- Install the clutch housing bolts, nuts, washers and lock washers.
Tighten
Tighten the clutch housing bolts and nuts to 175 N·m (130 lb ft).
