CAMPAIGN: KINKED TRANS. AUX. OIL COOLER INLET LINE

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN

SUBJECT: 96-C-33(A)- KINKED TRANSMISSION AUXILIARY OIL COOLER INLET LINE ---------------------------------------------------------------

MODELS: 1996 K- PICKUPS & C/K SUBURBANS WITH DIESEL ENGINE (L56/L65) AND 4L80-E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (MTI) BUILT AT OSHAWA & JANESVILLE ASSEMBLY PLANTS ---------------------------------------------------

THIS CAMPAIGN UPDATES AND REPLACES GMC CAMPAIGN NUMBER 96-C-33, ISSUED JUNE 1996. REVISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER IN THE HEADER ON PAGE 6 & 7 AND THE BEGINNING PARAGRAPH IN THE CUSTOMER LETTER.

ALL COPIES OF 96-C-33 SHOULD BE DESTROYED.

General Motors has decided that certain 1996 K- Pickups and C/K Suburbans with diesel engine (L56/L65) and 4L80-E automatic transmission (MT1) built at Oshawa and Janesville Assembly plants, may have a condition in which the automatic-transmission auxiliary oil-cooler inlet hose is kinked. Restricted transmission fluid flow can result from this kinked hose, which can cause lack of lubrication to the transmission gear components. This can result in premature wearing of load carrying members, which can lead to noises, slipping, and/or loss of gear ranges, and eventually complete loss of transmission function. Further, since the kinked hose is not readily noticeable to the dealer, transmission replacement without correcting the kinked hose condition can result in repeat transmission failures.

To correct this condition, dealers are to inspect for a kinked oil-cooler inlet hose. If it is kinked, a new hose will be installed, and if the vehicle has customer usage, the transmission fluid will be changed.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are CERTAIN 1996 K Pickups and C/K Suburbans with L56/L65 6.5L diesel engines and 4LBO-E automatic transmissions built within the following VIN breakpoints:

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number. Computer listings containing the complete Vehicle Identification Number, customer name and address data have been prepaired, and are being furnished to involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. The Customer name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with customers involved in this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.

These dealer listings may contain customer names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.

PARTS INFORMATION

Notice: An initial supply of parts required to complete this campaign will be pre-shipped to involved dealers of record. This pre-shipment will occur the week of June 10, 1996. Parts received for a recently transferred vehicle should be forwarded by the original dealer (with a phone call) to the dealer that received the transferred vehicle. Pre-shipped parts will be charged to dealer's open parts account.

Additional parts, if required, are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" prior to ordering requirements. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. An emergency requirement should be ordered on a CSO Customer Special Order.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Customers will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by General Motors "(see copy of divisional customer letter(s) included with this bulletin). A listing of owner names and addresses has been furnished to the involved dealers to enable dealers to follow up with owners involved in this campaign. This listing may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to this campaign.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin before customers take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. This could be done by mailing to such customers a copy of the appropriate divisional customer letter accompanying this bulletin. Campaign follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Locate inlet hose to auxiliary transmission oil cooler (Figure 1, Item 1)

2. Inspect hose for any sign of a kink in the area of concern shown in Figure 1, Item 2.

3. If hose is not kinked, proceed to step #29. If the hose is kinked in the area of concern shown in Figure 1, Item 2, proceed to the next steps.

4. Remove left and right turn signal lenses.

5. Remove grille fasteners (6 screws).

6. Remove grille (includes unplugging marker lamps)

7. Remove deflector panel.

8. Disconnect hose at cooler (Figure 1, Item 3 quick connect, discard "E" clip).

9. Disconnect hose at radiator (Figure 1, Item 4).

10. Remove hose (Figure 1, Item 1).

11. Position new hose in the proper orientation to avoid kinking or interference with the inner fender in the area of concern shown in Figure 1, Item 2.

12. Connect hose at radiator (Figure 1, Item 4) using caution to not cross thread fitting and to prevent tube from rotating. Torque nut to 45Nm (33 lb. ft.). Install a new "E" clip on the cooler connector.

13. Connect hose at the cooler making sure that the pipe clicks into the connector. Pull back on pipe to make sure that the pipe is fully fastened to the connector. Snap plastic cap onto quick connector assembly. Do not depress the retainer clip during this operation. Plastic cap has to be fully seated against the connector hex. Make sure that the pipe is not bent during this process.

14. Install deflector panel.

15. Install grille (includes plugging in marker lamps).

16. Install grille fasteners (6 screws), and torque to 1.5Nm (14 lb. in.).

17. Install right turn signal lens.

18. Install left turn signal lens.

19. If vehicle is a dealer stock unit, proceed to step #29. If vehicle is a customer owned unit proceed to next step.

20. Raise vehicle

21. Remove transmission pan (17 bolts) and drain fluid.

22. Remove filter assembly (check that seal is removed from trans case).

23. Clean transmission pan.

24. Install new filter and seal assembly.

25. Install reusable transmission pan gasket and pan (17 bolts), and torque to 24Nm (18 lb. ft.).

26. Lower vehicle.

27. Fill transmission (should take from 7-8 quarts). Do Not Overfill!

28. Check fluid level.

29. Install Campaign Identification Label.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each vehicle corrected in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label". Each label provides a space to include the campaign number and the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or a ball point pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label' is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in by the customer for periodic servicing.

When Installing the Campaign Identification Label, be sure to install the clear protective covering. Additional Campaign Identification Labels can be obtained from VISPAC Incorporated by calling 1-800-269-5100 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST). Ask for Item Number S-1015 when ordering.

Apply the 'Campaign Identification Label" only on a clean, dry surface.

* For Campaign Administrative Allowance, add 0.1 hours to the "Labor Hours".

CERTAIN 1996 K- Pickups and CIK Suburbans with diesel engine (L56/L65) and 4L80-E automatic transmission (MT1) built at Oshawa and Janesville Assembly plants, may have a condition in which the automatic- transmission auxiliary oil-cooler inlet hose is kinked. Restricted transmission fluid flow can result from this kinked hose, which can cause lack of lubrication to the transmission gear components. This can result in premature wearing of load carrying members, which can lead to noises, slipping, and/or loss of gear ranges, and eventually complete loss of transmission function.

C/K Trucks equipped with 6.5L diesel engines built at Oshawa Truck Assembly or at Janesville Assembly, may have an automatic-transmission auxiliary oil-cooler inlet hose that is kinked. Restricted transmission fluid flow can result from this kinked hose, which can cause lack of lubrication to the transmission gear components. This can result in premature wearing of load carrying members, which can lead to noises, slipping, and/or loss of gear ranges, and eventually complete loss of transmission function.

To be sure that your vehicle is to specifications, we will inspect for a kinked oil-cooler inlet hose. If it is kinked, a new hose will be installed, and the transmission fluid will be changed.

Instructions for performing this service have been sent to your GMC dealer, and parts are available. Please contact your GMC dealer to arrange a service date as soon as possible. This procedure will take about 2 hours to complete, but you should ask how much additional time your dealer will need to schedule and process your vehicle.

The enclosed postage paid owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction to your vehicle in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please furnish us the complete name and address of the person you sold or traded your vehicle to and return the card to us.
