Headlights Circuit Description Domestic

Voltage is available at all times to the headlamp switch from the LIGHTING fuse through CKT 42 (RED). A 17 A circuit breaker is inside the headlamp switch. The circuit breaker opens the circuit when it is heated by excess current, and it resets when it cools. If the supply circuit to the headlamps is shorted to ground while the headlamps are on, the headlamps will rapidly cycle on and off due to the action of the circuit breaker. The headlamp switch has the following positions:

    • OFF
    • Park lamps position
    • Headlamps position

When the headlamp switch is in the headlamps position, voltage is provided to CKT 10 (YEL) to the headlamp dimmer switch. The headlamp dimmer switch is part of the multi-function switch on the steering column. The headlamp dimmer switch position is changed by pulling the switch lever along the axis of the steering column. The dimmer switch allows the following selections:

    • High beam
    • Low beam

When the low beams are selcted, voltage is available on CKT 359 (PPL). The low beam current flows through the normally closed daytime running lamp relay, and continues on CKT 12 (TAN) to the headlamps. When the high beams are selected, voltage is available on CKT 11 (LT GRN) to the headlamps. The left headlamp is grounded at G108, and the right headlamp is grounded at G109.

Headlights Circuit Description Export

Voltage is available at all times to the headlamp switch from the LIGHTING fuse through CKT 42 (RED). Within the headlamp switch is a 17A circuit breaker. The circuit breaker resets automatically. The circuit breaker opens upon heating due to an overcurrent condition. The following actions occur when the current breaker is open:

    • The current stops.
    • The circuit breaker's thermal element cools.

The circuit breaker recloses when the circuit breaker's thermal element is sufficiently cool.

The headlamp selector switch has the following positions:

    • The OFF position
    • The parking lamps position
    • The headlamps position

When the switch is in the headlamps position, voltage is available on CKT 10 (YEL) to the headlamp dimmer switch. The headlamp dimmer switch is part of the multi-function switch on the steering column. The switch changes selections when the multi-function switch lever is pulled up along the axis of the steering column. Repeated switch operations alternates between the following selections:

    • High beam
    • Low beam

When the low beams are selected, voltage is available on CKT 12 (TAN) to the LH/RH HDLP fuses, then to the headlamps. Because the headlamps are grounded, current flows through the low beam filaments and light is emitted. When the high beams are selected, voltage is available on CKT 11 (LT GRN) to the LH/RH HIBM fuses, then to the headlamps. CKT 11 (LT GRN) also supplies the high beam indicator lamp in the instrument cluster. The left headlamp is grounded by CKT 150 (BLK) to ground G108. The right headlamp is grounded by CKT 151 (BLK/WHT) to ground G109.
