Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cables from the battery.
  2. • For the front battery, refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • For the auxiliary battery, refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the oil level indicator and tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  4. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands.
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  7. Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  8. Remove the oil pan rear oil seal.
  9. Remove the oil pan from the engine block.
  10. Clean the old RTV from the oil pan and the block.
  11. Clean all the oil and grease from the gasket surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Apply a 5 mm (3/16 in) bead of RTV sealant GM P/N 1052915 or equivalent to the oil pan sealing surface, inboard of the bolt holes. The sealer must be wet to touch when the oil pan is installed.

  2. Object Number: 540536  Size: SH
  3. Install the oil pan rear oil seal.
  4. Install the oil pan to the engine.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the oil pan bolts.
  7. Tighten

        • Tighten all except the rear two bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the rear two bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).
  8. Install the flywheel on the crankshaft. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement .
  9. Install the transmission in the vehicle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  10. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.
  11. Install the oil level indicator and tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  12. Connect the battery negative cables to the batteries.
  13.    - For the front battery, refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
       - For the auxiliary battery, refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  14. Change the engine oil and oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
