Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 28509-A Crankshaft
Sprocket Remover
- Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer
to
Battery Cable Replacement
in engine electrical.
- Remove the coolant reservoir
from the radiator. Refer to
Coolant Recovery Reservoir Replacement
.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls-7.4L.
- Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body. Refer to
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls-7.4L.
- Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. Refer to
Engine Front Cover Replacement
.
- Make sure that the timing
marks are aligned before removing the timing chain and sprockets.
- Remove the camshaft sprocket
bolts from the timing chain sprocket.
- Remove the timing chain and sprocket from the camshaft.
- Use the J 28509-A
to remove the crankshaft sprocket
from the crankshaft.
- Remove the crankshaft key, if necessary.
Installation Procedure
Important: Ensure that the sprocket alignment mark faces away from the engine block.
Ensure that the sprocket is fully seated against the crankshaft shoulder.
Tools Required
J 22102 Crankshaft
Sprocket Installer
- Install the crankshaft key, if necessary.
- Use the J 22102
to install the crankshaft sprocket to
the crankshaft.
- Install the camshaft sprocket
and the camshaft timing chain to the front of the camshaft.
- Make sure that the following
conditions exist:
• | The camshaft and the crankshaft timing marks are aligned. |
• | The camshaft dowel pin and the camshaft sprocket hole are properly
aligned. |
• | The gears and the chain mesh. |
Notice: Do not hammer the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft. To do so may
dislodge the rear camshaft plug and damage the camshaft.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the camshaft
sprocket bolts. Use the bolts to draw the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft.
Tighten
Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).
- Install the engine front cover to the engine block. Refer to
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
.
- Install the coolant reservoir to the vehicle. Refer to
Engine Front Cover Replacement
.
- Install the air intake duct to the throttle body. Refer to
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement
in Engine Controls-7.4L.
- Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly
Replacement i Engine Controls-7.4L.
