Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 9290-01 Valve Lifter
Remover (Slide Hammer Type)
- Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer
to
Battery Cable Replacement
in engine electrical.
- Remove the upper intake manifold from the lower intake manifold.

- Remove the lower intake manifold from the cylinder heads. Refer
to
Intake Manifold Replacement
.
- Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head. Refer
to
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement
.
- Remove the valve rocker arm from the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Removal
.
- Remove the push rod from the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Removal
.
- Remove the valve lifters
one at a time. Place the valve lifters in an organizer rack in order to ensure
that the valve lifters are later returned to the original bore during
installation.
A stuck valve lifter can be removed using J 9290-01
.
Installation Procedure
Important: Replace the engine oil and oil filter if new valve lifters or a new
camshaft is installed. Add engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367
or the equivalent to the crankcase oil.
- Install the valve lifters
and guide into the engine block. Lubricate the valve lifter and the body with
engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent.
- Install the push rods into the engine block. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Installation

- Install the valve rocker arms to the cylinder head. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Installation
.
- Install the valve rocker arm cover to the cylinder head. Refer
to
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement
.
- Install the lower intake manifold to the lower intake manifold.

- Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold.

- Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to
Battery Cable Replacement
