Hub and Drum Assembly Replacement All Models

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 2222-C Wheel Bearing Nut Wrench

  1. Raise the vehicle until the wheel is free to rotate.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire.

  3. Object Number: 160066  Size: SH
  4. Remove the axle shaft (5). Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement .
  5. Remove the retaining ring (10).
  6. Remove the wheel bearing adjusting nut key (9).

  7. Object Number: 156458  Size: SH
  8. Remove the adjusting nut using the J 2222-C .

  9. Object Number: 160066  Size: SH
  10. Remove the hub and drum (3).
  11. Inspect all the parts. Replace any parts as necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 160066  Size: SH
  1. Install the hub and drum (3) to the axle tube.
  2. • Be sure the bearings and the oil seal are positioned properly.
    • Apply a light coat of high melting point EP bearing lubricant to the contact surfaces and the outside of the axle tube.
  3. Install the wheel bearing adjusting nut key (9) into the key way.

  4. Object Number: 156458  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the adjusting nut using the J 2222-C .
  6. Adjust the bearing preload. Refer to Wheel Bearing Adjustment .

  7. Object Number: 160066  Size: SH
  8. Install the key (9).
  9. Install the retaining ring (10).
  10. Install the axle shaft (5). Refer to Axle Shaft Replacement .
  11. Install the wheel and tire.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
