Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 3049-A Valve Lifter Remover


    Object Number: 31510  Size: SH
  1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 4045  Size: SH
  3. Remove the valve push rods and the valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 328592  Size: SH
  5. Remove the valve lifter push rod guide.

  6. Object Number: 4578  Size: SH
  7. Remove the valve lifters from the engine block.
  8. Refer to Valve Lifter Removal .


    Object Number: 31350  Size: SH

    Important: Some valve lifters may be stuck in the valve lifter bores because of gum or varnish deposits and may require the use of J 3049-A for removal.

  9. Use the J 3049-A in order to remove stuck lifters.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 4578  Size: SH
  1. Install the valve lifters to the engine block. Refer to Valve Lifter Installation .

  2. Object Number: 328592  Size: SH
  3. Install the valve lifter push rod guide. Refer to Valve Lifter Installation .

  4. Object Number: 4045  Size: SH
  5. Install the valve push rods and valve rocker arms. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 31510  Size: SH
  7. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

Important: It is normal for new lifters to make a slight ticking noise when the engine is first started. Increasing the engine RPM slightly to raise oil pressure should stop the noise.
