Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 3049-A Valve Lifter Remover


    Object Number: 343948 Size: SH
  1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

    2. Object Number: 343915 Size: SH
  2. Remove the pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .


    3. Object Number: 11508 Size: SH

    Important: The valve lifters and valve lifter guides must be installed in the same location from which they were removed.

  3. Remove the valve lifter guide retainer.

    4. Object Number: 11509 Size: SH
  4. Remove the valve lifter guides.

    5. Important: Place the valve lifters in a rack in the upright position in order to maintain the oil inside the valve lifter.

  5. Remove the valve lifters one at a time.

    6. Object Number: 31350 Size: SH
  6. A stuck valve lifter can be removed using the J 3049-A to obtain access to the valve lifter.
  7. Inspect the valve lifter. Refer to Valve Lifters and Guides Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure

Important: 

   • When the new valve lifters or a new engine camshaft is installed, change the engine oil and the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
   • Add Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent to the engine oil.
   • Replace all the valve lifters when a new engine camshaft is installed.

  1. Install the valve lifters one at a time. Refer to Valve Lifter Installation .

    2. Object Number: 11508 Size: SH
  2. Install the guides and the valve lifter guide retainer. Refer to Valve Lifter Installation .

    3. Object Number: 343915 Size: SH
  3. Install the valve pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Installation .

    4. Object Number: 343948 Size: SH
  4. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .
