In certain situations, it may be necessary to remove an undamaged windshield from a 1988 C/K model. The service procedure listed below should be followed. Windshield leak repair information is also included in this bulletin.

WINDSHIELD LEAK REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Determine source of water entry.

2. If water is leaking into the vehicle at the top edge of the windshield, reseal using 'Windo-Weld Resealant' 3M part number 08633 and applicator gun 3M part number 08992 or equivalents. Use a 'Duck Bill' applicator tip to inject the sealant under the molded glass seal.

3. If water is leaking into the vehicle at the sides of the glass use 'Super Fast' urethane auto glass sealant 3M part number 08609 or equivalent.

SERVICE PROCEDURE (SAFETY GLASSES AND GLOVES MUST BE WORN)

REMOVAL

1. Remove radio antenna mast.

2. Remove windshield wiper arms.

3. Remove cowl grille.

4. Remove windshield stop screws (2).

5. Remove radio speaker grilles.

6. Remove windshield (A) pillar trim from both sides of truck and pull door seal weatherstrip back from windshield area.

7. Remove rear view mirror.

8. Cut a 6 foot length of .020 inch piano wire. Insert one end of the wire through the urethane adhesive to the interior of the vehicle.

9. Attach suitable handles to each end of the wire. (Kent-Moore kit P/N J- 36863 includes all materials necessary to perform steps 8 and 9.).

10. Spray a liquid soap solution around the entire perimeter of the windshield so the urethane is wet.

11. With one person at each end of the wire, work the wire back and forth exerting pressure against the urethane. Continue this action until all of the urethane has been cut and the windshield is loose.

NOTICE: When working the wire back and forth, the following precautions should be taken:

*To protect the IP from being damaged during the cutting action of the wire, a cloth or piece of cardboard should be placed between the wire and IP pad.

*When working the wire back and forth, do not allow the wire to make contact with the glass.

*The soap solution should be sprayed periodically ahead of the wire until urethane has been completely cut.

12. Carefully remove glass and set aside.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean all old urethane from the windshield using a razor knife.

2. Using GM repair kit P/N 993110 or equivalent which contains primers and adhesives:

a) Apply clear primer to the windshield covering an area 1.3 mm (1/2 inch) from the edge of the glass. Allow primer to dry. b) Apply black primer to the same area as the clear and allow it to dry. c) Apply a uniform 1 mm high bead of urethane over the black primer.

3. Reinstall the windshield making sure the two lower stop tab screw holes are aligned with the holes in the body.

4. Reinstall all other parts previously removed.

NOTICE: Until the new urethane has cured, air pressure from a closing door may cause the windshield to move. To prevent this from happening, lower one of the vehicle windows several inches before closing a door.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
