Subject:Locking Rear Differential Letter to Some 2005 GMC Canyon Owners

Models:2005 GMC Canyon 4WD Crew Cab SLE Light Duty Trucks

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

The purpose of this Service Bulletin is to advise dealer service managers, service advisors and dealer management that a letter has been delivered to a small number of GMC Canyon customers advising them that their vehicle does not have a locking rear differential. GMC sent the letter because of concern that some customers may not have fully understood the packaging on their vehicle. No warranty or compensation action should be taken by the dealer. However, the dealer should be aware of the letter content for discussion purpose should a customer inquire.

Basic Information:

GMC wanted to be sure that all its customers understood the equipment level on their new Canyon. Depending on the exact vehicle ordered, some Canyon SLE models have a standard Automatic Locking Differential, while other Canyon SLE models do not have an Automatic Locking Rear Differential unless it was ordered as an option. The letter was sent to be sure that customers who did not have the feature understood this. No customers paid for an Automatic Locking Rear Differential unless they received one.

Recommendation/Instructions:

No warranty or compensation action should be taken by the dealer however the dealer should be aware of the letter content for discussion purpose should a customer inquire. Dealers may advise customers to contact GMC Customer Assistance at 1-800-462-8782 should they desire to discuss the issue further.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
