Subject:Rough/Unstable Idle During Engine Warm Up (Reprogram PCM)

Models:1999-2000 Chevrolet Tracker
with Manual Transmission

Condition

Some customers may comment that their vehicle may run rough when idling with the clutch depressed after a cold start-up, until the coolant temperature reaches normal operating temperature.

Cause

The actual idle speed may drop below the desired idle speed.

Correction

Reprogram the PCM using the TIS 2000 software with CD #20/21 or later for 1999. Refer to Bulletin Number 99-06-04-060 for the PASS THRU programming procedure, which is also reprinted below.

For model year 1999 and 2000, U.S. and Canadian dealers will have the capability of reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) used in the Tracker vehicles. When performing this procedure, you will need a Tech 2 scan tool and a Techline terminal. The Techline terminal must be a minimum of a T7.

Important: Refer to TIS 2000 operation in the Tech 2 User's Guide for set-up and if operational difficulties occur.

  1. Open the TIS 2000 software application from the Techline terminal.
  2. From the Application Selection screen, select SERVICE PROGRAMMING SYSTEM. The SELECT DIAGNOSTIC TOOL AND PROGRAMMING PROCESS screen should appear.
  3. Select PASS THRU.
  4. Select REPROGRAM ECU or REPLACE AND REPROGRAM ECU.
  5. Select either VEHICLE or OFF BOARD PROGRAMMING ADAPTER (OBPA).
  6. If your selections are correct, press the NEXT key.
  7. At the CONNECT DIAGNOSTIC TOOL/DETERMINE VEHICLE screen, enter the correct information until the NEXT key is highlighted then click NEXT.
  8. Turn the ignition ON.
  9. Follow the directions on the CONNECT DIAGNOSTIC TOOL screen, then click NEXT. The VALIDATE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER screen should appear.
  10. The correct Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) may appear. If not, highlight the square and correct the VIN.
  11. Select NEXT and an option screen will appear. Ensure that all the entered information is correct. If not, enter the correct information.
  12. The CALIBRATION SELECTION screen should appear. Verify the current calibrations with the selected calibrations.
  13. A summary screen will appear. If correct, enter NEXT.
  14. The PROGRAM CONTROLLER/PROGRAMMING COMPLETE screen will appear when the programming is complete. Click on CLOSE.
  15. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds to reset the PCM.
  16. Start the vehicle and let the vehicle idle for two minutes while observing the operation of the vehicle.
  17. If the vehicle is operating normally, the programming is complete. Clear any and all trouble codes from all the modules in the vehicle.
  18. If the vehicle will not start or does not idle normally, re-do the PCM REPROGRAMMING PASS THRU PROCEDURE.
