Verify that the backup lamps remain illuminated when the manual selector is moved out of the REVERSE position.

Do the backup lamps remain illuminated?

Go to Step 3

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

    • Disconnect the backup lamp switch on manual transmission equipped vehicles at connector 212.
    • Disconnect the transmission range switch on automatic transmission equipped vehicles at connector 212.

Do the backup lamps remain illuminated?

Go to Step 4

Repair the short to voltage in the RED wire between the backup lamp switch or the transmission range switch and S318. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 6

    • Replace the backup lamp switch on manual transmission equipped vehicles. Refer to Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission.
    • Replace the transmission range switch on automatic transmission equipped vehicles. Refer to Transmission Range Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
