Verify that the backup lamps are inoperative.

Are the backup lamps inoperative?

Go to Step 3

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Disconnect the backup lamp switch connector on manual transmission vehicles.
  2. Measure the resistance through the switch terminals 1 and 2 with the manual selector in REVERSE.
  3. Disconnect the transmission range switch on automatic transmission vehicles.
  4. Measure the resistance through the switch terminals 6 and 8 with the manual selector in REVERSE.

Is the resistance 0-2ohms?

Go to Step 5

  1. Replace the backup lamp switch. Refer to Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmission.
  2. Replace the transmission range switch. Refer to Transmission Range Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmission.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 8

    • Connect a test lamp between the backup lamp switch terminal 2 and chassis ground.
    • Connect a test lamp between the transmission range switch terminal 6 and chassis ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate with the ignition switch ON?

Go to Step 7

Repair the open in the YEL wire between S211 and the backup lamp switch or the transmission range switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 8

Repair the open in the RED wire between S318 and the backup lamp switch or the transmission range switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Step 8

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
