The air conditioning (A/C) system compressor is driven by a belt from the engine crankshaft through the compressor clutch pulley.

The compressor pulley rotates freely, without turning the compressor shaft, until an electromagnetic clutch coil is energized. When voltage is applied to energize the clutch coil, a clutch plate and hub assembly is drawn rearward toward the pulley. The magnetic field locks the clutch plate and pulley together as one unit to drive the compressor shaft.

The A/C compressor performs 2 main functions:

    • Compresses the low pressure refrigerant vapor from the evaporator into a high pressure, high temperature vapor.
    • Pumps refrigerant and refrigerant oil throughout the air conditioning system.

The clutch coil is energized by the A/C compressor control module.

The following parts may be replaced as necessary:

    • The clutch coil
    • The clutch pulley
    • The pressure plate
    • The pressure relief valve

The drive shaft seal is installed internally on this compressor. The internal parts of the compressor assembly are not serviceable. If any internal part of the compressor malfunctions or wears out, the compressor must be replaced as a unit.
