Use the external leakage check in order to pinpoint the location of the leak. In some cases you can easily locate the leak. A seepage leak may be more difficult to isolate. Use the following method in order to locate the seepage leaks:

  1. Wipe dry the entire power steering system with the engine OFF.
  2. Inspect the fluid level in the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  3. Add fluid to the reservoir if necessary.
  4. Start the engine.
  5. Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops while flushing the power steering system. Holding the steering wheel against the wheel stops will cause high system pressure, overheating, and damage to the power steering pump and/or gear.

  6. Have an assistant operate the steering wheel while you search for the leakage. Turn the steering wheel from the right stop to the left stop 2-3 times.
  7. Locate the exact area of the leak by visually inspecting the following locations:
  8. • The steering gear (2)
    • The power steering pump (1)
    • The power steering fluid reservoir (3)
    • The power steering pipes
    • The power steering hoses
  9. Repair the leak.
