Use the external leakage check in order to pinpoint the
location of the leak. In some cases you can easily locate the leak. A seepage
leak may be more difficult to isolate. Use the following method in order
to locate the seepage leaks:
- Wipe dry the entire power steering system with the engine OFF.
- Inspect the fluid level in the power steering fluid reservoir.
Refer to
Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid
.
- Add fluid to the reservoir if necessary.
- Start the engine.
Notice: Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops while flushing the
power steering system. Holding the steering wheel against the wheel stops
will cause high system pressure, overheating, and damage to the power steering
pump and/or gear.
- Have an assistant operate the steering wheel while you search for the
leakage. Turn the steering wheel from the right stop to the left stop 2-3
times.
- Locate the exact area of the leak by visually inspecting the following
locations:
• | The power steering pump (1) |
• | The power steering fluid reservoir (3) |
• | The power steering pipes |
• | The power steering hoses |
- Repair the leak.
