Lip type seals prevent fluid leakage around rotating shafts. Lip type seals require special treatment. The steering gear and the steering pump shaft use this type of seal. Inspect and thoroughly clean the sealing surfaces. When there is a leak in one of these areas, always replace the seal(s).

Replace the shaft only if you find very severe pitting.

If the corrosion in the lip seal contact zone is slight, clean the surface of the shaft with a crocus cloth. Replace the shaft only if you can not stop the leakage by smoothing the shaft with the crocus cloth.
