Inspect the boot (3) for cracks and damage which could indicate any of the following conditions:
• | Rusty steering gear components |
• | Entry of dust into the steering gear |
• | Lack of grease on the steering gear components |
If the steering gear boot is cracked or damaged, replace the boot. Refer to Steering Gear Boot Replacement - On Vehicle .
Inspect the steering rack boot for dents or improper folds. If found, compress the boot for several seconds in order to correct the folds.
Inspect the tie rod seal (4) for cracks or damage. Replace a cracked or damaged tie rod seal. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
Inspect the outer tie rod end ball joint (1) for play. If the outer tie rod end ball joint is damaged, replace the outer tie rod end. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement .
