Installation Procedure

For gear shift lever case components. Refer to Gearshift Controls .


    Object Number: 168260  Size: SH
  1. Apply the GM P/N 12346240, or equivalent, to the extension case gearshift lever case mating surface.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the gearshift lever case (1) to extension case (2) with 10 bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the gearshift lever case bolts to 17 N·m (12 lb ft).

  5. Install the breather hose to the gearshift lever case by securing with 1 clamp.
  6. Install the rear transmission crossmember onto the vehicle by securing with 4 bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the rear transmission crossmember bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  8. Install the 2 bolts (2) to the rear transmission mount (1).
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the rear transmission mount bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  10. Remove the hydraulic jack from underneath the transmission.
  11. Install the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) and the muffler/tail pipe assembly to the vehicle. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  12. Remove the speedometer driven gear case retaining bolt.

  14. Install the ground wire (1) to the speedometer driven gear case by securing with 1 bolt.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the speedometer driven gear case retaining bolt (2) to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  16. Install the VSS bolt (1) to speedometer driven gear case.
  17. Connect the VSS electrical connector (2).
  18. Install the rear propeller shaft into the vehicle aligning the index marks made during removal by securing with 4 bolts and 4 nuts.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten propeller shaft bolts and nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  20. Apply the GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transmission drain plug.

  22. Install the transmission drain plug (1) into the transmission.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the transmission drain plug (1) to 28 N·m (20 lb ft).

  24. Add approximately 1.5 liters (1.6 quarts) of synthetic 75W-90 GL4 lubricant, or equivalent, into the transmission oil level/filler plug hole. The oil level should be even with the bottom of the transmission oil level/filler plug hole.
  25. Apply GM P/N 12346004, or equivalent, to the threaded portion of the transmission oil level/filler plug (2).

  27. Install the transmission oil level/filler plug (3) into the transmission.
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the oil level/filler plug (3) to 28 N·m (20 lb ft).

  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30. Install the 4 bolts to the fan shroud at the radiator.
  31. Tighten
    Tighten the fan shroud bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  32. Install the gearshift control lever to the gearshift lever case. Refer to Gearshift Control Lever Replacement .
