Water Pump Replacement 1.6L Engine
Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Remove the negative battery cable.
- Drain the engine cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
.
- Remove the crankshaft
pulley (1). Refer to
Crankshaft Pulley Replacement
in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.
- Remove the timing belt
(1). Refer to
Timing Belt Replacement
in
Engine Mechanical-1.6L.
- Remove the timing belt
tensioner and tensioner plate (1).
- Remove the oil level indicator guide tube.
- Remove the rubber seals
(1) from the water pump.
- Remove the water pump
mounting bolts and nuts.
- Remove the water pump (1) and gasket (2) from the
vehicle.
- Clean the water pump gasket mating surface.
Installation Procedure
- Install the new gasket
(2) to the engine block (3).
- Install the water pump (1).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Secure the water pump with mounting nuts and bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the water pump mounting nuts and bolts to 13 N·m
(115 lb in).
- Install new rubber seals
(1) to the water pump.
- Install the oil level indicator guide tube.
- Install the timing belt
tensioner (2). Refer to
Timing Belt Tensioner Installation
in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.
- Install the timing belt
(1). Refer to
Timing Belt Installation
in
Engine Mechanical-1.6L.
- Install the crankshaft
pulley (1). Refer to
Crankshaft Pulley Replacement
in Engine Mechanical-1.6L.
- Refill the engine cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
Tighten
Tighten the battery cable retainer to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
- Road test the vehicle. Ensure that the coolant level is correct
and that there are no leaks.
