Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the lower closeout panel.

  4. Object Number: 179546  Size: MH
  5. Remove the electrical leads from starter (4).
  6. Remove flywheel inspection shield.

  7. Object Number: 98400  Size: SH
  8. Remove the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then lower the starter.
  9. Remove the starter.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 98400  Size: SH
  1. Install the starter.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the starter to the engine bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the starter bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install flywheel inspection shield.

  6. Object Number: 179546  Size: MH
  7. Connect the leads to the starter.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the cable to solenoid nut (4) to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  9. Install the lower closeout panel.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
