Condition

Some customers may comment that the engine overheats and/or there is excessive noise from the engine compartment.

Cause

Due to the extreme use of the Police Package Vehicle, the engine compartment temperature may damage the electric cooling fan motor.

Correction

The installation of a newly designed heat shield will reduce the amount of extreme temperature on the cooling fan motor and increase the amount of air flow over the cooling fan motor.

Follow the service procedure below to correct this condition.

    • For diagnosis of Engine Overheating, refer to Engine Overheating (SI Document ID #769751).
    • For additional cooling fan diagnosis, refer to Symptoms - Engine Cooling (SI Document ID #749003).

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Open the hood and install fender covers.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in the Engine Electrical subsection of the Service Manual (SI Document ID #705040).
  3. Partially drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (SI Document ID #7930320.
  4. Remove the bolts and the nuts from the engine mount strut at the engine mount strut bracket on the engine.
  5. Remove the four bolts from both engine mount strut brackets on the upper radiator support.
  6. Remove both of the engine mount struts and brackets.
  7. Remove the bolts from the left front end sheet metal diagonal brace at the radiator support.
  8. Remove the bolt from the front end sheet metal diagonal brace at the inner fender.
  9. Remove the upper radiator inlet hose from the radiator and position it out of the way.
  10. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in the Engine Controls-3.8L subsection of the Service Manual (SI Document ID #815360).
  11. Remove the cooling fan shroud bolts.
  12. Remove the radiator upper support brackets that connect to the fan shroud.
  13. Remove the PCM harness from the fan shroud clip.
  14. Disconnect the cooling fan shroud electrical connectors.
  15. Remove the lower push-in retainer from the fan shroud.
  16. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the retainers at the bottom of the cooling fan shroud.
  17. Remove the cooling fan shroud assembly from the vehicle.
  18. If replacing the electric cooling fan shroud module, P/N 10435233, install the heat shield, P/N 10333479, to the right side cooling fan using a push-in retainer, P/N 20664092.
  19. If using the existing electric cooling fan shroud module, install the heat shield, P/N 10333479, to the right side cooling fan using a push-in retainer, P/N 20664092.
  20. Install the cooling fan shroud.
  21. Install the transmission oil cooler lines to the retainers at the bottom of the cooling fan shroud.
  22. Install the lower fan shroud push-in retainer.
  23. Connect the cooling fan shroud electrical connectors.
  24. Install the cooling fan shroud bolts.
  25. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m(89 lb in).

  26. Install the radiator upper support brackets and bolts that retain the fan shroud.
  27. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m(89 lb in).

  28. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in the Engine Controls-3.8L subsection of the Service Manual (SI Document ID #815360).
  29. Install the PCM harness on to the fan shroud clip.
  30. Install the upper radiator inlet hose to the radiator.
  31. Install the left front fender upper diagonal brace.
  32. Install the bolts to the front end sheet metal diagonal brace at the radiator support.
  33. Tighten
Tighten the front end sheet metal diagonal brace-at-radiator support bolts to 25 N·m(18 lb ft).

  34. Install the bolts to the front end sheet metal diagonal brace at the inner fender.
  35. Tighten
Tighten the front end sheet metal diagonal brace to the inner fender bolts to 47 N·m(35 lb ft).

  36. Install the engine mount struts and brackets.
  37. Install the bolts to the engine mount bracket on the upper radiator support.
  38. Install the bolts and the nuts to the engine mount struts at the engine mount strut bracket on the engine.
  39. Tighten

        • Tighten the engine mount strut bolts on the radiator support to 48 N·m(35 lb ft).
        • Tighten the engine mount strut nuts on the engine to 48 N·m(35 lb ft).
