This bulletin cancels and supersedes dealer service bulletin 88-40 (Section 6D) dated August, 1987. Symptoms have been expanded to include Code 43, Surge and Misfire. All copies of 88-40 should be discarded.

Some vehicles equipped with 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L engines built with distributor, P/N 1103698, may exhibit a rough running engine condition, surge, misfire and/or Code 43. This condition may be the result of oil ascending the distributor shaft and accumulating inside the distributor cap.

If oil is found inside of the distributor cap, wipe the distributor cap, module and distributor base clean with a soft cloth and replace the distributor mainshaft assembly with /N 10467353 per service procedures in section 6D4 of the appropriate Service Manual.

Parts are currently available from GMSPO.

Use applicable labor time and operation number.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
