Power Steering Pump Replacement 8.1L
Removal Procedure
- Place a drain pan under the vehicle.
- Remove the power steering pulley. Refer to
Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement
.
- Remove the nut (1) and
clamp (3) retaining the filler neck (1) to the power steering pump, if equipped.
- Remove the bolts (2) from
the front of the pump.
- Remove the bolts retaining the power steering mounting bracket.
- Remove the bolts from
the rear of the pump.
- Remove the hoses from the pump.
- For vehicles with variable effort steering, disconnect the electrical
connector.
- Remove the pump from the vehicle.
- Remove the rear bracket from the power steering pump.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the rear bracket to the power steering pump.
Tighten
Tighten the rear bracket retaining bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the power steering pump to the vehicle.
- Install the hoses to the pump.
Tighten
Tighten the hose fitting to 28 N·m (20 lb ft).
- For vehicles with variable effort steering, connect the electrical
connector.
- Install the bolts (1)
to the rear of the power steering pump.
Tighten
Tighten the rear bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the power steering pump mounting bracket.
Tighten
Tighten the mounting bracket bolts to 46 N·m (34 lb ft).
- Install the power steering
pump (1) to the bracket.
- Install the bolts (2) to the front of the pump.
Tighten
Tighten the power steering pump retaining bolts to 50 N·m
(37 lb ft).
- Install the filler neck
to the power steering pump.
- Install the nut (1) and clamp (3) retaining the filler neck to
the power steering pump.
Tighten
Tighten the filler neck retaining nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
.
Power Steering Pump Replacement 6.5L Diesel

Removal Procedure
- Remove the upper fan shroud. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
in Diesel Engine Mechanical 6.5L.
- Remove the power steering
pump pulley. Refer to
Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement
.
- Place a drain pan below the pump.
- Remove the front mounting
bolts.
- Remove the rear mounting nut from the stud.
- Remove the power steering pressure and return hoses.
- Cap the power steering hoses.
- Remove the pump.
- Remove the rear mounting
bracket (3) from the pump.

Tighten
Tighten the rear bracket nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the power steering pressure and return hoses.
Tighten
Tighten the hose fittings to 28 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Install the power steering pump.
- Install the front mounting
bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
- Install the power steering
pump pulley. Refer to

.
- Install the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
in 6.5L Diesel Engine Mechanical.
- Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Fill and bleed the system. Refer to
Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid
and
Power Steering System Bleeding
