HVAC Compressor Clutch Does Not Engage w/6.5L (L65)

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. The HVAC control assembly is inoperative if the module does not respond to an operator request.

  2. Ensure to test all A/C request circuits that connect to the A/C high pressure switch and the A/C low pressure switch.

Important: The ambient air temperature must be above 3°C (38°F).

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Place the blower motor switch in the maximum speed position.
  3. Place the A/C request switch in the ON position.
  4. Place the air temperature control switch in the coldest position.

Does the A/C compressor operate?

Perform the A/C performance test. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) System Performance Test in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

Is the HVAC control assembly inoperative?

  1. Start the engine.
  2. With a scan tool, observe the A/C Request parameter in Engine Data 1 List.
  3. Place the A/C request switch in the ON position.

Does the scan tool indicate that the A/C Request parameter is YES?

Test the voltage supply circuits to the HVAC control assembly for a short to ground, for a high resistance, or for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the A/C high pressure switch.
  3. Connect a 3-ampere fused jumper between the request circuits at the connector of the A/C high pressure switch.
  4. Start the engine.
  5. With a scan tool, observe the A/C Request parameter.
  6. Place the A/C request switch in the ON position.

Does the scan tool indicate that the A/C Request parameter is YES?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the A/C low pressure switch.
  3. Connect a 3-ampere fused jumper between the request circuits at the connector of the A/C low pressure switch.
  4. Start the engine.
  5. With a scan tool, observe the A/C Request parameter.
  6. Place the A/C request switch in the ON position.

Does the scan tool indicate that the A/C Request parameter is YES?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Reconnect the A/C high pressure switch.
  3. Reconnect the A/C low pressure switch.
  4. Test all A/C request signal circuits of the A/C high pressure switch and the A/C low pressure switch for a short to ground, for a high resistance, or for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Measure the voltage from the A/C request circuit at the PCM. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the voltage measurement near battery voltage?

With a scan tool, command the A/C compressor clutch relay ON and OFF.

Does the relay of the A/C compressor clutch turn ON and OFF with each command?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch relay.
  3. Probe the battery positive circuit of the A/C compressor clutch relay with a test lamp that is connected to ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a 10-ampere fused jumper between the battery positive voltage of the A/C compressor clutch relay and the supply voltage circuit of the A/C compressor clutch.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the A/C compressor clutch engage?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Using a test lamp which is connected to ground, probe the coil side of the supply voltage circuit of the A/C compressor clutch relay.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit and the coil side voltage supply circuit of the A/C compressor clutch relay.
  2. With a scan tool, command the A/C compressor clutch relay ON and OFF.

HVAC Compressor Clutch Does Not Engage w/8.1L (L18)

Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. The HVAC control assembly is inoperative when the module does not respond to any operator control requests.

  2. When the blower motor is in the OFF position, a voltage is applied to the OFF blower motor control circuit. The A/C system will not operate if a voltage is applied to the OFF blower motor control circuit.

  3. Ensure to test both A/C request circuits that connect to the A/C high pressure switch.

  5. With a scan tool, observe the A/C Request parameter.
  6. Place the A/C request switch in the ON position.

Does the scan tool indicate that the A/C Request parameter is ON?

  2. Disconnect the A/C low pressure switch.
  3. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the A/C low pressure switch signal and ground circuits.
  4. Start the engine.
  5. With a scan tool, observe the A/C Compressor Cycling parameter.

Does the scan tool indicate the A/C Compressor Cycling parameter is 1=Normal?

With a scan tool, command the A/C compressor clutch relay ON and OFF.

Does the A/C compressor clutch relay turn ON and OFF with each command?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Probe the coil side voltage supply circuit of the A/C compressor clutch relay with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
