Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement L65

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the coolant until the radiator coolant level is below the thermostat. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  2. Object Number: 64991  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose.
  4. Remove the following components:
  5. • The bolt
    • The stud
    • The water outlet (4)
  6. Remove the thermostats (2) and the gaskets (3) from the housing.
  7. Clean the sealing surfaces of the thermostat housing and the water outlet.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the thermostats (2) into the housing.
  2. Replace both thermostats to ensure that the cooling system functions properly.

  3. Install the gaskets (3) into position.
  4. Install the water outlet.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the bolt and the stud.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt and the stud to 42 N·m (31 lb ft).

  8. Connect the radiator inlet hose.
  9. Refill the coolant into the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  10. Start the engine. Run the engine with the radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot. This indicates that the thermostat is still open.
  11. With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the coolant level reaches the bottom of the filler neck.

  12. Object Number: 13762  Size: SH
  13. Install the radiator cap to the radiator. Ensure that the arrows line up with the overflow tube.
  14. Inspect the coolant system for leaks.

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 746710  Size: SH
  1. Drain the coolant until the level is below the thermostat.
  2. Reposition the inlet hose clamp (1) at the water outlet.
  3. Remove the inlet hose (2) from the water outlet.

  4. Object Number: 635643  Size: SH
  5. Remove the water outlet bolts (2).
  6. Remove the water outlet (1).
  7. Remove the thermostat (3) from the water crossover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 635643  Size: SH
  1. Install the thermostat (3) to the water crossover.
  2. Install the water outlet (1).
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the water outlet bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the water outlet bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  6. Install the inlet hose (2) to the water outlet.
  7. Position the inlet hose clamp (1) at the water outlet.
  8. Add coolant as necessary.
