Important: The Caterpillar® diesel engine (RPO LG5) uses a 21 SI Series Delcotron® generator. In addition to other circuits, this charging system requires a circuit to supply power to the generator that provides an additional electromagnetic boost to the generator rotor during startup and low engine rpm. The circuit must provide from 10 ohms to 50 ohms overall resistance to the generator regulator.

The instrument panel (IP) wiring harness has a resistance wire on circuit 25 (WHT). This circuit is switched to the battery by the ignition and start switch. The circuit is part of the battery charge indicator circuit. Depending on which has the lower resistance, the battery charge indicator or the resistance wire provides the required resistive current flow to a diode then to the internal generator regulator. The circuit allows the generator to operate properly even if the battery charge indicator bulb fails.

   • The conductor type is stainless steel core Cross-Linked Polyethylene Elastomer (XLPE) resistance wire.
   • The insulation is white and has black printing that reads "XLPE RESISTANCE - DO NOT CUT".
   • The wire size is 0.22 mm² (AWG Size 24 gage).
   •  The wire has a stainless steel core and provides a resistance of 6.591 ohms (±0.330 ohms) per meter (39.4 in).
   • The wire length is 303.5 cm (119.6 in).
   •  The wire provides a resistance of 20 ohms (±2 ohms).
Do not use standard wire when repairing this circuit. Low-speed generator performance will be degraded.

If the white resistance wire on circuit 25 is damaged or out of specification, use GM Parts Group 2.530, Part Number R0068871, cut to the proper length, to maintain the required 20 ohms (±2 ohms) circuit resistance.Refer to Splicing Inline Harness Diodes .
