Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the park brake drum, if equipped. Refer to Propeller Shaft Parking Brake Drum Replacement in Brakes.
  2. If equipped with the 6.6L or 7.2L engine, with regular production options (RPOs) MK0/MPU/MM7/MSC and MWW, disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
    3. • If equipped with RPO JE3 (2)
    • If equipped with RPO JE4 (1)

  3. If equipped with the 8.1L engine, with RPOs MSC/MPU, disconnect the VSS electrical connector.
    4. • If equipped with RPO JE3 (2)
    • If equipped with RPO JE4 (1)

  4. Remove the rear bearing cover nuts (1) or bolts (4), if equipped, and washers (5).
  5. Remove the rear bearing cover.
  6. Remove the rear oil seal.
  7. Clean the rear bearing cover with clean solvent.
  8. Inspect the bearing retainer for damage.

Installation Procedure

    Important: 

       • The seal lip must face toward the transmission.
       • The seal must not be cocked or distorted.

  1. Install a new seal into the housing (1), using J 22834-A . Coat the seal lip with transmission oil.

  2. Install the bearing cover (2). Align the oil passages in the bearing cover and the transmission case.

    3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the rear bearing cover nuts (1) or bolts (4), if equipped, and washers (5).

    4. Tighten
    Tighten the rear bearing cover bolts/nuts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  4. If equipped with the 8.1L engine, with RPOs MSC/MPU, Connect the VSS electrical connector.

  6. Install the park brake drum, if equipped. Refer to Propeller Shaft Parking Brake Drum Replacement in Brakes.
